Τῶν δὲ πόλων [τοῦ κόσμου] ὁ μὲν λέγεται βόρειος, ὁ δὲ νότιος, βόρειος μὲν ὁ διὰ παντὸς φαινόμενος ὡς πρὸς τὴν ἡμετέραν οἴκησιν, νότιος δὲ ὁ διὰ παντὸς ἀόρατος ὡς πρὸς τὸν ἡμέτερον ὁρίζοντα.
‘Of the [celestial] poles, one is called “northern”, the other one “southern”, northern the one that is continually visible at our home, southern the one that is continually invisible on our horizon.’
