early Indian system dividing each zodiac sign into nine equal segments of 3°20′, with each segment assigned to a sign in a miniature zodiac framework and corresponding to a nakṣatra pāda.

त्रिंशल्लवानेव तु कण्टकाख्यान् वदन्ति केन्द्रेषु चतुर्षु लग्नात् । स्वे स्वे गृहे तु स्वगृहांशकाख्या वर्गोत्तमाख्या यवनैर्निरुक्ताः ॥६१॥

triṃśallavāneva tu kaṇṭakākhyān vadanti kendreṣu caturṣu lagnāt | sve sve gṛhe tu svagṛhāṃśakākhyā vargottamākhyā yavanairniruktāḥ ||61||

‘The thirty degrees are called Kaṇṭaka (spikes) when situated in the four lagna or Ascendant. When (a planet) is in its own sign and in its own division (aṃśa), it is termed ‘Svagṛhāṃśa.’ Such a position is called ‘Vargottama,’ as stated by the Yavanas (Greek astrologers).”’
