θεωρέω

Κατὰ γὰρ τὸν αὐτὸν χρόνον οἷς μὲν ὁ ἥλιος ὅλος ἐκλείπει, οἷς δὲ τὸ ἥμισυ, οἷς δὲ τὸ ἔλαττον τοῦ ἡμίσεος, οἷς δὲ τὴν ἀρχὴν οὐδὲν μέρος τοῦ ἡλίου ἐκλελοιπὸς θεωρεῖται.

‘For at the same time, for some the Sun is eclipsed whole, but for some half of it, and for some less than half, and for some no part of the Sun at all is observed to have been eclipsed.’

Ἀρκτικὸς μὲν οὖν ἐστι κύκλος ὁ μέγιστος τῶν ἀεὶ θεωρουμένων κύκλων, ὁ ἐφαπτόμενος τοῦ ὁρίζοντος καθ’ ἓν σημεῖον καὶ ὅλος ὑπὲρ γῆν ἀπολαμβανόμενος, ἐν ᾧ τὰ κείμενα τῶν ἄστρων οὔτε δύσιν οὔτε ἀνατολὴν ποιεῖται, ἀλλὰ δι’ ὅλης τῆς νυκτὸς περὶ τὸν πόλον στρεφόμενα θεωρεῖται.

‘The arctic circle is the biggest of the always visible circles, the one touching the horizon in one point and as a whole taken aside above the earth, in which the stars lying in it never perform a setting nor a rising, but are observed during the whole night turning around the pole.’

ἀλλ’ οὐ προσέσχον πρῶτον τὸν πολεύοντα καὶ διέποντα Ἑρμῆν εἰς πάθος ἐμπεπτωκότα· καὶ γὰρ μεγίστην ἀπόστασιν ἀπεῖχε τοῦ Ἡλίου καὶ ὑπὸ Κρόνου μόνου ἐθεωρεῖτο· ὃ καὶ βιαιοθάνατον ἀπετέλει.

‘But (those who previously interpreted this horoscope) did not pay attention first of all to Mercury, the one inhabiting and managing (the day and hour), which had fallen into suffering, for it had its greatest elongation from the Sun and was in aspect with Saturn only, and that caused violent death.’
